Huge thanks to JEM Engines for all their support with engine parts.
Okay long post cuz here’s where I explain what was wrong with the engine/electronics and what’s been done to fix it (thanks to everybody that’s helped because I was out of my depth here)
Starting with the electronics I checked through every system and replaced the batteries.
The engine is a Nanni 14hp inboard, we first suspected a problem with fuel and when inspected there was a lot of water in the fuel system (likely due to the knockdown) and the filter showed some diesel bug though not much. The solution was to drain the fuel, take the fuel tank out (difficult access) and have it pressure cleaned. We reinstalled the tank and put new filters on.
The next problem was with the oil, which was overtopped and over 50% diesel. This meant the oil was too thin and not doing its job lubricating the engine, which caused engine failure, but the concern was why this was happening. He suspected the seal in the lift pump had failed, and although we couldn’t see a tear we decided to replace the whole lift pump. The engineer consulted the experts at the local Namni dealerships and they suggested that with the problems I’d been having the sensible thing to do would be to also replace the fuel injector pump. Things were beginning to get expensive and my stay in Padstow extended. He contacted JEM engines who agreed to send the parts free of charge! as long as we sent back the old unit to be refurbished. How completely amazing
This meant more time in Padstow, waiting for the post.
When opening the fuel injector pump parcel we realised I’d also been given new injectors! We fitted all this and got the engine running
Then we realised a small problem in the bleed screw above the fuel filter, the thread was extremely damaged and so wouldn’t seal properly. And an easy job to fix but one that needed to be taken back to the workshop. Another wait
Now my engine is up and running again! it’s been a case of solving one problem to find another. I’ve now had the engine running happily in harbour so the next step is to go for a short sea trial tomorrow.
All the other photos here are of my time in and around Padstow
